What
Do We Do?

Imagine
that an armed conflict erupts in your country. Even if you have
no active part in the conflict, you are still likely to suffer:
you might see the destruction of your house or neighbourhood,
or the death of friends and loved ones; your children might no
longer be able to go to school, and the office where you work
might no longer exist. All around you, you see the destructive
consequences of war and each day another piece of your life is
taken away.
What's
more, if you belong to a minority ethnic group, if you follow
a distinct religion, or if your social group or your opinion differs
from the accepted norm, then you are likely to be a victim of
prejudice and persecution. With little or no rights and your life
in grave danger, you are left no choice but to flee the area with
whatever you can carry with you.

In
just the year 2003, there were 23 active armed conflicts
in the world. It is estimated that currently a third of the world's
population live in situations of conflict. The impact of such conflicts
is devastating and may include:
Deaths;
an increase in the number of single mothers; a massive displacement
of populations; the inability of the State to provide basic services
including health and education; the destruction of local
trade, a moratorium on investment and the collapse of local
systems of credit and capital flow; damage to the environment
which often leads to natural disasters and disease; famine;
an increase in domestic violence; young people without professional
training; and children socialized in a climate of violence.

RESCATE
works to help the victims of such wars and conflicts which are also
sources of hunger, poverty, displacement, and migration, as well
as individuals requesting political asylum from dictatorships, from
personalized persecution, or from the violation of their basic human
rights. Given their particular vulnerability during times of conflict,
we have a special interest in helping women and children.
